Buy Michter’s – Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey

Buy Michter’s – Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey Since the 1990’s, the Michter’s team has been doing pioneering work to re-establish the high quality American Rye whiskey category. The May 2015 inaugural release of Michter’s US1 Barrel Strength Rye marked yet another milestone in that quest. For maturation, the Rye distillate is entered into the barrel at 103 proof, rather than a more industry standard higher proof. Barrel entry at a lower proof of 103 rather than a higher proof costs Michter’s more money in terms of barrels and warehousing, but we believe it yields a richer, smoother, more full-bodied whiskey after proper maturation. A single barrel product, each barrel of Michter’s US1 Barrel Strength Rye is bottled at its particular alcohol level at the time of bottling. Buy Michter’s – Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey

Introduction to Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey

Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey is a small batch, high-rye whiskey that is bottled at barrel proof. This rye is made with a mashbill of 51% rye, 37.5% corn, and 11.5% barley. The grain bill for this whiskey is slightly different than other Michter’s ryes, which are made with a mashbill of 53% rye, 33% corn, and 14% barley.

The whiskey is aged for a minimum of four years in new, charred American white oak barrels. The barrels used for this rye are some of the smallest in the industry which allows for more surface area contact between the spirit and the wood, leading to greater flavor extraction.

After aging, the whiskey is bottled without being chill filtered or having any added coloring agents; both of these choices help to preserve the rich flavor profile of the spirit.

Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey has a deep amber color and a rich nose filled with aromas of ripe fruits, honey, spices, and toasted oak. On the palate, this rye is full-bodied and complex with flavors of dark fruits, baking spices, chocolate, and coffee. The finish is long and lingering with hints of dried fruits and spices.

History of the Distillery

Michter’s Distillery has a long and storied history. The distillery was founded in 1753 by John Shenk, a Swiss Mennonite farmer, in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. Shenk sold the distillery to Robert Bashore in 1808. It changed hands several times over the next century until it was purchased by Louis Forman in 1922. Forman ran the distillery until Prohibition forced it to close its doors in 1919.

After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, Forman reopened the distillery. Unfortunately, the Great Depression hit just as Michter’s was getting back on its feet and Forman was forced to sell the business to Walter Mattingly in 1941. Mattingly owned the distillery for nearly 30 years before selling it to Chuck Miller in 1970.

Under Miller’s ownership, Michter’s began producing rye whiskey again for the first time since Prohibition. The rye recipe that Miller used was based on one that had been created by legendary whiskey maker George Dickel. Michter’s rye quickly gained a reputation for being some of the best whiskey on the market and demand for the limited release bottles grew exponentially.

In 1987, Joe Magliocco and Richard “Dick” Newman Jr. purchased Michter’s with the goal of restoring it to its former glory. They invested heavily in upgrading the facilities and increasing production capacity. In 1992, they released

Tasting Notes: Aroma & Flavor Profile

When nosing Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye, expect an intense and concentrated aroma with notes of fresh mint, cracked pepper, and charred oak. On the palate, this rye is full-bodied with flavors of dark chocolate, baking spices, and dried fruit. The long finish is dry and warming, with lingering notes of oak and spice.

Production Process

Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye is a special release that is only made in small batches. This rye whiskey is made using the same mash bill as their regular rye, but it is aged for a longer period of time in order to achieve a higher proof. The result is a more intense flavor profile that is perfect for those who love rye whiskey.

The first step in the production process is to mill the grain. This process helps to break down the starches into sugars which will be used to make the alcohol. Next, the grain is mashed with hot water in order to extract all of the sugars. Once the mash has cooled, it is fermented with yeast which turns the sugars into alcohol.

After fermentation, the whiskey is distilled twice in order to achieve a high proof. Finally, it is aged in new oak barrels for at least two years. This long aging process gives Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye its unique flavor profile that is loved by so many whiskey enthusiasts.

Lingo: Common Terms Used in Whiskey Tasting

Whiskey tasting is a complex and nuanced process, with its own language and terminology. Here are some common terms you’ll hear when tasting whiskey:

Nose: The smell of the whiskey, often described as floral, fruity, spicy, smoky, or nutty.

Body: The feel of the whiskey on your palate, often described as light, medium, or full.

Finish: The aftertaste of the whiskey, often described as short (quick), medium (lingering), or long (lasting).

Proof/ABV: The alcohol content of the whiskey, expressed as a percentage. Proof is twice the ABV. For example, a 100 proof whiskey is 50% ABV.

Different Types of Barrels Used

The charring of the barrel creates a layer of charcoal on the inside of the barrel which helps to filter impurities out of the whiskey as it ages. Used bourbon barrels are also popular for aging whiskey.

Food Pairings for Michter’s Rye Whiskey

When it comes to Michter’s Rye Whiskey, there are endless possibilities when it comes to food pairings. From rich and savory dishes to sweet and decadent desserts, this versatile spirit can complement any meal.
